See update post on Nov 16 2011 ?Publix will open late 2012 or early 2013
Publix, a south east grocery chain, plans to build a 54,000 sq foot grocery store on a 3.5 acre property located at the corner of Gold Hill Road and Pleasant Road in the Fort Mill Township.
The proposed Publix grocery store would be the first in our Fort Mill, York County area. It would also be the first Publix location near Charlotte NC since Publix is primarily in the southern and western portions of South Carolina.
Publix has to re-zone the 3.5 acres from a agricultural residential zoning to a business development (commercial) zoning designation with York County approval. The York County Council has initially approved the zoning and use change during their September 7th 2010 meeting. See re-zoning application.
Publix proposed grocery store location has met opposition by next door residents who live in the Ashford on the Water subdivision. The Ashford resident?s concerns are; adding too much traffic, safety issues, noise, and having a large grocery store structure next to their subdivision as reasons for their complaints. The next step in the approval process is to seek York County Zoning Board of Appeals approval on Oct. 14. The Ashford on the Water residents protests will be heard at the Oct 14th meeting.
York County is still growing especially in the Fort Mill Township area. Another new grocery store Aldi, located on Hwy 160 next to Waterstone subdivision, is under construction with a planned open in January 2011.
I am hearing many different points of view if we need more grocery stores. Some don?t like the commercial building and increased traffic. Other residents encourage the competition to save money. What?s your point of view?
Update October 22, 2010
Ken Elkins with the Charlotte Business Journal reported on? October 21, 2010,? The York County Council approved zoning changes that will allow a Florida developer to build the area?s first Publix near Tega Cay. In addition, Publix is eying a second south Charlotte? location around the hwy 521 location in Lancaster County SC.

I’m sorry but I just hate the not in my back yard mentality. People should just stop complaining.
Most neighborhoods welcome the idea of having a grocery store within walking distance, and there really is nothing like Publix in the greater Charlotte area. Harris Teeter is nice, as is the Fresh Market and Bloom, but for great values and the best bakery and deli I’ve ever been to, Publix is by far the most outstanding supermarket there is. As a lifelong shopper, I make sure to stock up on all of my bakery and deli needs anytime my travels take me farther south; so many of the people I work and live near are transplants such as myself, and we are all in accordance that what we are missing is “our” supermarket. Once you go, you’ll agree. And I’ve never heard of a neighborhood having a crime/traffic incident rate go up because of a Publix; in fact, they are usually found in the better areas of town.
I grew up in Florida and Publix is the best. I live in Charlotte but would like to move to Fort Mill, and this is another added incentive. They are really nice, clean grocery stores, best carrott cake too :)
I for one would love to see Publix in this location. I grew up with Publix an dit is a very clean and awesome store. The subs are the BEST!!!
I am really happy about Publix coming to Fort mill area . Even though i live in south west Charlotte i will drive to Fort Mill. I grew up in Florida and there is nothing better then a publix cake or sub . I hope to see Publix there really soon
Publix is the absolute best!! I’M SO EXCITED!! I grew up in South Florida where Publix is a staple…I cannot tell you how happy I am to see it coming to Fort Mill, SC. This way all of my friends here can see what they have been missing. INCREDIBLE!!
I am so happy Publix is coming to Fort Mill.
I plan to be a regular shopper – For its cleanliness, fresh food, sales and exceptional customer service; I would highly recommend Publix as a grocery alternative.
This will also bring more jobs to York county – can’t complain about that!
It’s like a little bit of home.. :-)
I am soooo happy Publix is coming to Fort Mill. IT’S ABOUT TIME!!! Publix is the best grocery store. I grew up in Florida and Publix was THE place to shop!
THANK YOU PUBLIX AND YORK COUNTY for bringing Publix to Fort Mill! Publix is definately WHERE SHOPPING IS A PLEASURE!!! Publix is the best supermarket and we miss it dearly. We moved here from Miami, FL and reside in Lancaster, SC. Now all we need is the second Publix to come to 521 in Lancaster, SC!!! PLEASE!!!
thank you publix for coming to fort mill
Please, please say that Publix is coming to Ft. Mill. I also grew up in South Florida and really miss Publix. I live in Charlotte and will drive to Ft. Mill at least once a week.
Publix can’t come soon enough!! I too lived in Sout Florida for a number of years before moving to Fort Mill. What I miss about Forida; my family, friends, the beaches and PUBLIX!!! We often plan trips to Columbia and Greenville just so we can stop at Publix. Then, of course, we grab a delicious Publix sub for our picnic and stock the cooler with all our other Publix favorites! They have the best subs, fried Chicken, carrot cake, Temptee cream cheese (that you cannot find in the area), Boars Head meats (which you can only find at Lowes and llimited varieties at the Peach Stand) and numerous other products. Additionally, they are very clean and have fabulous employees. This comes as no surprise as Publix is a great company to work for!!!! Again, Publix when will you be in Fort Mill? I will be there opening day!!! I wish I had a chicken tender sub and a piece of carrot cake from Publix right now!!! :)
We two (my wife Gloria and I ) relocated to Charlotte from Sunny South Fla. We have missed Publix soooo much since moving here. Wish they could come to North Carolina also. But I will drive to Ft. Mill just to shop one more time at Publix. They are the greatest !!
I hope it works out. I’m moving to Fort Mill and live in GA where there are a lot of Publix stores. They are very clean, and you can get great deals so I’m excited if this works out.
I hope Ashford resident’s read these comments, having a PUBLIX in this area would be the best thing to EVER happen to this place, and I just moved here, there is nothing bad to say about any PUBLIX’s, their Bakery is top notch, a 100% better Bakery than any other grocery store around any State, I would put my pay-check on that, so everybody need to be nothing but HAPPY for this addition to Fort Mill.
Youre so cool! I dont suppose Ive read anything like this before. So good to seek out anyone with some authentic ideas on this subject. realy thanks for starting this up. this website is something that’s wanted on the net, somebody with a bit originality. useful job for bringing one thing new to the internet!
I am so excited to learn about Publix coming into the area. I have shopped at many grocery stores in my lifetime and I can tell you that Publix is by far the greatest. Their food selection is great and their service is professional, caring and friendly. I just can’t wait to learn of the grand opening. Thanks so much to the Publix management for selecting this area. For those of you who may not have had the shopping experience you are in for the ride of your life.
You know the Publix Grocery store will be a welcome addition especially with the Food Lion store closing at the corner of Hyw 160 and Gold Hill Road
yeah! I was born and raised in Tampa, Fl – just moved to Charlotte and I will drive the 23.5 minutes I mapped my route to be – gladly! Publix is the absolute best grocery store in the world! They will definitely give that crapfest Harris Teeter and that ultra crap fest Food Lion a huge run for their money!!!
We cannot wait to have Publix open! We moved to Lake Wylie from Central Florida recently and will drive to the Fort Mill location, telling them every week, we are from Lake Wylie, hoping they will consider opening more stores. Publix is a very high end feeling store with prices that are fabulous. Quality and value – that’s Publix.
There are no sidewalks on Pleasant Rd so the neighborhood residents will not be safe walking to Publix. I would love to see sidewalks put in for safety reasons.
My husband has been a Publix employee for over fifteen years. We are very excited that Publix has decided to branch into the Fort Mill and Rock Hill area. We have visited the new store locations and were very impressed with the beautiful, up and coming area’s as well as the courteous and very pleasant towns people.
We look forward to serving the Fort Mill and Rock Hill area and offering a new, fresh and friendly shopping experiance :)
I for one, am tickled to death to see a new Publix coming in. I am a former employee and they have the most delicious bread. In fact I haven’t had a decent loaf of bread since I moved up here.
I am a York resident and hoping Publix builds a store in York, SC soon we need another grocery store desperately. All we have is Walmart, BiLo, and Food Lion miles apart need I say more??
Sincerely, Beverly Irwin
