A wife, mom, and a Keller Williams Fort Mill Realtor 10 year old son is suffering from a debilitating condition called PANDAS. In this weeks’ Talk of the Town Carolinas, Patti interviews Marcia to find out more about PANDAS and the organization that is educating and fund-raising to support PANDAS research.
PANDAS stands for Pediatric Autoimmune?Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated?with Streptococcal Infections. It is used to?describe children who have a sudden onset of?symptoms such as Obsessive Compulsive?Disorder (OCD) and/or tic disorders, following?a strep infection (namely ?strep throat? or?Scarlet Fever). It is a misdirected immune?response resulting in inflammation of a child?s?brain. It is?estimated to affect 1 in 200 children.? PANDAS is not rare. It’s often times is misdiagnosed.
Marcia is?actively?involved with the support group PRAI’s PANS RESEARCH & ADVOCACY INITIATIVE. PRAI’s aim is to connect doctors with PANDAS medical experts and connect families with those who understand so they can get emotional and social support. They network and engage people throughout the mid-Atlantic to raise money for PANDAS research projects so we can finally put the controversy to rest.
Marcia said on her PRAI’s personal fundraising page “This has a personal impact on my family as my son is suffering from this debilitating condition. No child should have to suffer from an abrupt onset of severe OCD, tics, crippling anxiety, depression, rages, phobias, intense personality and mood changes, and oftentimes severe regression in school. It is absolutely heartbreaking to watch your child go through this and it wreaks havoc on the entire family. It has taken us almost a year to find a diagnosis and we are still struggling to find effective treatments that have longstanding results.”To learn more visit pansadvocacy.org.
