Boy’s Death Prompts Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Awareness Foundation

The family of an eleven-year-old boy creates an awareness foundation after his death because of carbon monoxide poisoning. Talk of the Town Carolinas interviewed Jeannie Williams, mother of Jeffrey Williams, and Piedmont Medical Center EMS Chief Eric Morrison to find out more about the Jeffrey Lee Williams Foundation, the dangers of Carbon Monoxide, ways to detect and prevent poisoning, and the Foundation’s programs to support the York County fire departments and EMS staff with tools to detect and combat carbon monoxide poisoning.

Jeffrey Lee Williams passed away in 2013, Jeffrey and his mother Jeannie were on an overnight trip in Boone NC. When they arrived in their Best Western hotel room, in less than an hour, they were both overcome by silent, odorless, deadly carbon monoxide fumes from a faulty pool heater. Jeannie was discovered the next morning, barely alive, after having been unconscious on the bathroom floor for more than fourteen hours. Jeffrey did not survive. The room did not have a functioning carbon monoxide detector.

The Jeffrey Lee Williams Foundation was created with a singular mission: to help prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. No one should get sick from carbon monoxide poisoning. No one should die from carbon monoxide poisoning. As long as there are carbon monoxide detectors and places to put them, tragedies like the one experienced by the Williams family can be avoided. As a collaborative effort, the Fire Chiefs and EMS personnel representing York County, South Carolina with the Jeffrey Lee Williams Foundation (JLWF) initiated a county-wide effort to make residents and emergency responders safer and more aware of CO. This plan aims to provide the 18 fire departments in York County with 2,000 CO alarms to install in residential homes, 45 portable always-on monitors for York County first responders and 27 hand-held CO fingertip diagnostic monitors for EMS departments. The foundation has raised over $93,000 so far. Watch this talk of the Town video to find out more.
