Energy For Life Walkathon Charlotte

The 10th Annual Energy For Life Walkathon was held on Saturday, Oct 12th, 2019 at Freedom Park in Charlotte. The walkathon was held to raise money for research and education for the diagnosis treatment and cure of mitochondrial disorders. The mitochondria in the cells throughout our bodies are responsible for creating 90% of the energy needed to sustain life and support organ function. When mitochondria malfunction, organs start to fail – people get sick, and even die. Mitochondrial disease is difficult to diagnose, because it affects each individual differently. Symptoms can include seizures, strokes, severe developmental delays, inability to walk, talk, see, and digest food combined with a host of other complications. Although mitochondrial disease primarily affects children, adult onset is becoming more common. 1 in 200 people may carry a mutation that could develop into mitochondrial disease at some point in their life.
