See The Fort Mill Fire Department Open House

Talk of the Town Carolinas visited the Fort Mill Fire Department’s annual Open House on October 14, 2017. We found many fire trucks, first responders like firemen, paramedics, police officers,? emergency response demonstrations, fire safety games for the kids, EMS ambulances, rescue trucks, an air medical helicopter and a FMFD Station full of guests taking advantage of the day’s festivities.

Established in 1915 the Fort Mill Fire Department was created as a result of a large downtown fire. The department remained all volunteer until December 1994 when the first paid firefighter was hired by The Town of Fort Mill.? Today, the Fire Department answers approximately 1,600 emergency calls a year, with a staff of 24 full-time firefighters on three shifts and provide services such as fire suppression, rescue services and medical emergency response.

The Fort Mill Fire Departments open house is well timed since this years national fire prevention week was October 8th through the 14th. This year’s theme was ?Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!?.

Talk of the Town Carolinas host Patti Mercer interviewed Fire Chief Chipper Wilkerson, Fire Marshal Jesse Soares, Lieutenant Aaron Boone, Captain James Broome to find out more about the open house and what it means to be a Fort Mill first responder.
