Fort Mill Times Reporter?John Marks posted a story last night?in both the Times and Herald?that the ?”Tega Cay Council?voted unanimously Thursday night to have City Manager Charlie Funderburk sign an agreement to take over the Tega Cay Water Service utility”.
Here are some quick facts about the vote last night and the process:
- Tega Cay Council votes okay to sign purchase contract Thursday May 1, 2014.
- Purchase price estimated at 5.85 million
- The city is contracting to purchase the older water and sewer service currently not owned and run by the city. System is owned by?Tega Cay Water Service (TCWS) aka Utilities Inc.
- The TCWS ?service is the system that has been plagued with spills, broken pipes and other problems for many years. The system serves approx 1700 homeowners in Tega Cay. SC DEHC has issued several consent orders and fines for sewer spills against TCWS or Utilities Inc over many years.
- The Cty of Tega Cay owns and operates a separate system serving approx 1500 homeowners. ?This system is not plagued with sewer spills or fines at this time.
- Closing of the sale is set for May 30th, but other approvals are needed
- The state Public Service Commission unanimously voted to approve the sale on May 1, 2014
- The state Department of Health and Environmental Control must still approve the sale.
- The council will consider a bond and budget measure to pay for acquiring the system during a special called meeting May 12, with a second vote scheduled for May 19.
- If the sale goes through on the 30th, The two systems will operate independently for a while. Mayor Sheppard also told John Marks ?That does not mean that the entire system will be fixed on the 31st of May.??Sheppard asked residents for patience.
