York County will host an event for recycling and proper disposal of household hazardous materials and shredding of confidential documents on Saturday, October 5, 8am-noon. The event will be held at the York County Public Works facility, 220 Public Works Road (off Highway 5), near the Moss Justice Center, York, SC.
The event is open only to residents of York County. The event enables citizens to safely dispose of materials that shouldn’t be placed in the garbage can or aren’t accepted for disposal/recycling at the County’s 16 Collection & Recycling Centers. Accepted items are leftover cleaners, chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, oil-based paint, turpentine, paint thinner, mineral spirits, brake fluid and gas/oil mix. Infectious, biological or radioactive materials and explosives are prohibited.
Materials should be transported to the collection event in sturdy boxes with newspaper stuffed between the containers to prevent spills. Please leave items in the original containers to assist staff in identifying the materials. Citizens will be asked to stay in their car while workers unload the materials. No major appliances will be accepted. A hazardous material company will be on site to properly dispose of the materials collected and Carolina Shred will provide the shredding service.
The next scheduled event is scheduled for March 7 , 2020. The Household Hazardous Materials Collection and Shredding Events are funded by York County Government. For more information contact York County Solid Waste Collection & Recycling at 803-628-3181.
